EHOVE produces results
To the editor:
I am writing to urge your support of the EHOVE renewal levy on Nov. 4. The support of any levy is unusual for me. I, like many voters, am always skeptical of the results. So why do I support this levy? Because, EHOVE produces results.
I have supported the EHOVE Diesel Technology program in various ways for over 10 years and have employed students from vocational schools for over 25 years. Our company has hired three students from EHOVE in the past four years and is currently participating in the fifth quarter program. Students who graduate from these programs have skills it would take two years to acquire via other means. They receive real world work experience while still in school which makes them more likely to be successful in their first work experience. Even if they choose not to pursue a career in the program they chose at EHOVE, they have work experience which would take several jobs and two to three years after graduation to achieve. In several cases we have followed graduates who left our organization for careers in other fields. They are always more successful than if they had not had the EHOVE opportunity.
Perhaps most important, EHOVE graduates are employable. EHOVE's programs take into consideration the jobs available in the area. EHOVE networks with employers who are interested in students with EHOVE training. As an employer I recognize that an EHOVE graduate has spent two years in a program he has an interest in and, while he may not be fully trained, is a better prospective employee than those graduating from a non-vocational program.
Finally, EHOVE offers opportunities to students who do not have an interest, or in some cases, the ability to be successful in a general studies program. We should support this levy for this reason alone. We owe these students at least the same opportunity to be successful as those who excel in non-vocational programs.
Support EHOVE's renewal levy. Your tax money will be well spent.
