NARVRE hosts Ohio Consumer's Counsel speaker

On Wednesday, Sept. 10, members of Bellevue NARVRE Unit 147 met for their monthly business meeting and potluck. President Mike Ruffing welcomed all and gave grace before the noon potluck.

Guest speaker Christopher Verick, an outreach and education specialist from the Office of the Ohio Consumer's Counsel, was introduced to the group. He addressed the members on "What You Need To Know About Ohio's Energy Policy" (Senate Bill 221). Senate Bill 221 requires a 22 percent reduction in energy demand by 2025 and includes bench marks and penalties.

The subject of alternative energy was discussed -- he stated that by 2025, 25 percent of electricity sold in Ohio must be generated by alternative sources such as clean coal, nuclear energy, fuel cells and cogeneration. Also half of the advanced energy and renewable energy must be located in Ohio. He also spoke on regulation on market rates and excess earnings and elimination of regulatory transition charges and potential rate increase.

A booklet on Smart Energy Tips was passed out to all to help cut cost on all utilities. The Office of the Consumer's Counsel (OCC) represents the interest of 4.5 million households in proceedings before state and federal regulators and courts. The agency also educates consumers about electric, natural gas, telephone and water users and resolves complaints from individuals. One can call anytime 1-877-742-5622 toll free in Ohio for help.

The monthly drawing winner was Bob Fay.

The next meeting will be Wednesday, Oct. 8, at noon, at the American Legion Hall. All railroad retirees and spouses or working railroaders are welcome. We will have a speaker from the new "Willows" by The Bellevue Hospital. Free blood pressures checks will be available.
