The Lady Fliers basketball team got their preseason off to a good start as they made their annual trip down south to scrimmage some of the finest basketball programs in the state.
The Lady Fliers traveled to Minster High School, which is south of Lima where they scrimmaged Minster, Lima Bath and Columbus BrookHaven. They did quite well despite not having senior Lindsay Smetzler, who was in Michigan on a recruiting visit.
"All of the teams that we faced were very good," Coach John Cahill said.
"Lima Bath went to state last year out of the same region that Perkins was in which shows you how good they were and they have everybody back. BrookHaven has been to state the last five years in Division I and Minster is one of the top Division IV programs in Ohio," he added.
"I was a really good scrimmage with a lot of really good teams, and I think that we did pretty well. I think that we handled ourselves fairly well against some good competition," the coach said. "Our kids did some good things against some high caliber teams. The scrimmage will give us some things to work on, and I think that we picked up some things that will help us down the road. It was a long bus ride, but it helped to show us where we stood against some good caliber teams.
"I was pleased with the way that we handled the ball, because we were pressed almost the whole time that we were down there. I don't know if we'll play three teams that good with those different styles of basketball the rest of the year."
