1898

Irene, little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Furlong, was nearly burned to death when her dress caught fire was she was playing in front of the stove.

Clarence, 6-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Will VanAtta of North Ridge, died of typhoid fever.

Mrs. Wallace W. Smith died.

Mrs. Anna Kistler Rine was given a $14,500 verdict against the Nickel Plate road for injuries sustained in an accident at Oil Station.

Mrs. Effie Nye Rall died at the age of 38.

James Hartnett, Lake Shore employee, died after only two days illness.

Mildred, 7-month-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Streeter, died.

90 years ago

1918

The sugar allowance of two pounds per person per month was increased to three pounds per month.

Charles Yetter received a message from Honolulu which stated that his son, John Yetter, had died there on board ship.

The brick storage and packing house of the Clyde Kraut Company on East Street was found to be on fire shortly after midnight, and in spite of every effort to save it, the building and content were destroyed. The loss approximately $40,000.

John Berger, employed by Ray Shellhammer, sustained a broken left arm when his clothing became caught in a machine he was repairing at the French Nursery. His clothing was twisted and torn off. Dr. E.A. Baker attended the injury.

A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. E. Booze.

Local deaths reported were: John E. Loschert; and Charles T. Hurd.

1928

Mrs. Phebe Mugg, Clyde's oldest and one of its most beloved citizens, in her 95th year stated her politics early by voting for the Republican ticket.

An all steel safe was installed in the office of the Board of Public Affairs to give protection to the ledger and other accounts of A.M. LeFever.

Local deaths reported were: Mrs. Martha Beard Hummel.

1938

E.D. Kleckner, local dairyman, was granted a license to sell pure, full-cream milk of Jersey cows, under the nationally registered Jersey Creamline Products trademark.

A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Martin Binger.

Local deaths reported were: Jesse Frederick; Robert G. English; George W. Parent; Donald Raymond Downing; Rev. Warren Lincoln Rogers; Mrs. Sarah Ann Strohl; Francis X. Baechle.

Mrs. Wayne E. Brown, who had been active in Cub Scout work over a period of several years, was presented with a Scouter's key at the annual meeting of the Sandusky County District Boy Scouts of America held in Fremont.

John Becker III, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Becker Jr., South Main Street, fell down the basement stairway and broke his collar bone.

The Clyde Fire Department was called to Camp Grand to extinguish a fire that had started in a car owned by Tom Wilbert while he was pouring alcohol into the radiator.

A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Culbertson; and sons to Mr. and Mrs. Paul Craig, Mr. and Mrs. Robert McGrath, Mr. and Mrs. Lay Loudenslager, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Killinger, Mr. and Mrs. Jack DeLuca, Mr. and Mrs. B.K. MacDonald and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Mann.

1958

Lawrence Friedley, Chief of Clyde Volunteer Fire Department, announced that the old bell in the belfry atop City Hall will again be rung after each fire run has been completed and the firemen returned to the station. The bell had been silent for several years.

Clyde's FFA Chapter was 20 years old.

40 years ago

1968

Pvt. Gary L. Dauch, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Dauch, was reported killed in Vietnam.

Rev. Robert Heinbaugh was named to become director of church relations for Hiram College.

Daughters were born to Mr. and Mrs. Ramiro Vargas, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Brown, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Bucklew and Mr. and Mrs. William Dickman; and sons to Mr. and Mrs. Philip Miller and Mr. and Mrs. Merrill Smith; and twin daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Murphy; and adoption of a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. John Schwan.

1978

Five Clyde youths were seriously injured Monday, Nov. 6, when the car they were in slid out of control on a curve on CR 212, one mile south of US 20, between Clyde and Fremont. All were treated at Memorial Hospital and transferred to Medical College of Ohio Hospital.

Helen Beddow, 50, Clyde, escaped serious injury after hitting the side of a train engine. She heard the train, stopped, not seeing the unit, then pulled forward hitting the engine.

Daughters were born to Mr. and Mrs. David Vogel, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Graeter and Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Winke; and sons to Mr. and Mrs. Bobbie Warwick and Mr. and Mrs. Riley Carr; and adoption of a son to Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Klickman.

Local deaths reported were: Glenn C. Dick, 55; Sharon Kime, 30; and Peggy Dalzell, 55.

1988

Clyde-Green Springs School District's 12-mill operating levy was defeated by 274 votes.

Clyde City Council created a new job position in the water distribution system, in which the new person would oversee water connections to houses and businesses in the city.

A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Stan Pugh; and son to Mr. and Mrs. Paul Pierce; Mr. and Mrs. Terry Keegan and Mr. and Mrs. Hank Balzer.

Clydescope 2000 Economic Development Corporation executive director Richard Dagg reported that Clyde remains the only Ohio city in consideration for the possible site of a large distribution center. An official announcement will be in March, 1999.

A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Timothy Hankins; and a son to Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Baker.

2007

Clyde City Council will have at least one new member in January. Carolyn S. Farrar was the top vote getter at the polls with 974 votes. The Sandusky County Board of Election could not call the race for the second seat on the council. Newcomer Gary W. Beamer had 613 votes and incumbent Nina Pascua had 608. Beamer was eventually named the winner after a recount.

Nearly 400 people attended and participated in the Taste of Life Cooking Show in the Clyde High School auditorium. "We've been receiving compliment after compliment since the show," noted Becky Brooks, the evening's emcee and editor of The Clyde Enterprise, which sponsored the event.

The Fliers Football team continues on to the Region 10 Semi Final playoff after defeating Tippecanoe 41-7 on Nov. 2. The Clyde High School team must play the Napoleon Wildcats at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 9, at Toledo Central Catholic Gallagher Athletic Complex and stadium, in Toledo.

Voters in the Clyde-Green Springs Exempted Village School district approved a 1.5-mill, five-year renewal permanent improvement levy 1,738 to 1,475. District voters also elected two new school board members: Janet Frankart and Matthew M. Nicely.
