120 years ago

1888

After Jan. 1, 1889, no teacher can teach in the public schools of Ohio unless he or she shall have passed successfully an examination in physiology and hygiene. The Examiners now have these studies included in the regular examinations. Teachers holding certificates can have these branches added upon examination.

August Schmidt, of Margaretta Township, Erie County, fell from an apple tree at his home last Thursday and broke his neck. He was a pioneer of that section, and leaves a widow, three sons and two daughters.

90 years ago

1918

While Carl Weis and Miss Stella Whitehead were enroute home from Fremont, the rear axle of their car broke and a wheel came off, letting the car down on one side. Carl had been driving at a lively clip and the car turned almost around before he could stop it.

Mrs. Toland, chef at the Nichols House, was severely burned by an explosion of gasoline fumes, and she and her daughter had a narrow escape from cremation, and the hotel from destruction by fire.

Albert Charles Seiler, 23, was killed in action in France July 19, the word reaching here in late September. He was the first Clyde boy killed in action. He was a member of the 58th Infantry Machine Gun Company.

A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. S.E. Ensign; and a son to Mr. and Mrs. Albert Sheets.

1928

Plans being made by the Exchange Club for the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of General James B. McPherson were turned over to patriotic organizations.

A daughter was born to Lt. and Mrs. Paul Talbot.

70 years ago

1938

Hal Shaull fractured his right arm when his gun "kicked" while he was out hunting. Dr. E.J. Shanahan attended the injury.

A large barn on the Clarence Wahl farm a mile west of Vickery burned to the ground. The loss was covered by insurance.

Carl Purdham sustained serious burns on his face from acid while working at the Davidson Enamel Company.

Mayor W.H. Blair officially opened the new Clyde Bowling Alleys, managed by LeRoy Turner and located in the Davenport Block on South Main Street.

A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Carlton Schwan; and sons to Mr. and Mrs. George Burkett and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Reed.

60 years ago

1948

Mrs. Myrtle Hughes received injuries to one hand when it was caught in the wringer while she was washing. She was taken to Memorial Hospital, Fremont.

Don Strong joined The Enterprise force as a printer's devil and apprentice boy.

The farm home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Queen in York Township on the Mt. Pleasant Road was destroyed by fire.

Daughters were born to Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Haff, Mr. and Mrs. George Meisner, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Davis and Mr. and Mrs. Forest Sanders; and sons to Mr. and Mrs. Will S. Heffner and Mr. and Mrs. William Stewart.

Local deaths reported were: Mrs. Jennie Mary Keegan; Miss Dolores C. Lynch; Foster F. Martin; Mrs. Lucy Carley; J.E. Hyde; Harry Grabach; and Carl D. Churchill.

50 years ago

1958

The Ohio State Highway Patrol celebrated its 25th birthday. On Nov. 15, 1933, 60 men started out from Camp Perry to take on the job of enforcing state traffic laws on Ohio highways. They were equipped with 54 motorcycles and six cars. The Patrol, in 25 years, grew from 23 posts in five districts to 58 posts in ten districts.

The new Sohio Service Station opened under the management of brothers Walter and Lewis Meggitt. The station was located at the intersection of Parkway and W. McPherson Highway.

The Mount Carmel Evangelical United Brethren Church held a dedication service for the newly remodeled church which was ruined in the Sept. 4 tornado.

Daughters were born to Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Bishop, Mr. and Mrs. Clifton Trusdle and Mr. and Mrs. Emil Veigl; and sons to Mr. and Mrs. William Roth, Jr., Mr. and Mrs. Donald L. Goshe and Mr. and Mrs. LaVern Grover.

Local deaths reported were: M.J. Pearson, 87; Lloyd Beard, 76; Ernest A. Miller, 69; and Darlene June Hall, 19.

1968

Military services were held for Pvt. Gary Dauch, who was killed in Vietnam.

Clyde Recreation Board adopted a ten year plan for improvements in Clyde Parks, which included work on the amphitheater.

A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. William Carroll; and sons to Mr. and Mrs. James Bond and Mr. and Mrs. Tom Cullen.

Local deaths reported were: Mrs. Harry (Hazel King) Gross, 68; Kenneth Stahl, 42; Mrs. Thomas (Goldie Gray) Haley; infant Tracey Alan Dayringer; Miss Pearl Hintz, 60; Frank Sartor, 81; Mrs. Rudolph (Maude Crandall) Bartley, 85; Adrain Aleman, 5; and Miss Fannie Eisenhard, 92.

30 years ago

1978

Whirlpool general manager Stan Stokes presented a check for $6,500 from the Whirlpool Foundation to CUP Fund chairman Joe F. Wilson. Whirlpool Employees Community Charities donated $3,610.

Clyde Police Department was investigating two break-ins of the Grand Store and of Steve's News Stand, both in the 100 block of South Main Street.

1988

Clyde residents were guaranteed a 25% decrease in electric rates after the city's electric system begins operations in 1989.

Joe Wilson was the new coordinator-counselor for Terra Tech College's Small Business Development Center.

Daughters were born to Mr. and Mrs. David Engeman and Mr. and Mrs. Ron Autullo; and sons to Mr. and Mrs. Adam Crockett, Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Alafita and Mr. and Mrs. Kevin Joseph.

Brandis Bouyack a member of the Barnyard Buddies 4-H Club did something different for her 4-H project for the Sandusky County Fair. Bouyack made a new suit for Ol' St. Nick. Bouyack's uncle, John Glass is a member of the Winesburg Christmas Committee and was in charge of arranging hours for Santa and sprucing up the Santa House.

2007

Clyde Police arrested a 17-year-old youth on two counts of attempted murder and three counts of aggravated arson for one fire that destroyed a 129 W. McPherson Highway home early Monday morning. Police Detective Mark Roach reported James Rogers, 17, who lived at the West McPherson home, was taken into custody. The youth was taken to the Sandusky County Youth Detention Center. Rogers later entered a plea to one count and is sentenced in juvenile court to a year of residential counseling and probation.

The 2007 Associated Press Northwest All-District Division III football team was announced with Clyde High School Fliers coach Marc Gibson receiving the title of one of the top two coaches in the district.
