1888

Miss Nerva Gale, of Cleveland, is spending a few days vacation at her home in Green Springs and with friends in Clyde.

Mrs. Geo. Bemis, one of the best teachers in Sandusky County, has been granted a certificate for three years by the county Examiner, being the only one in a class of 33 who won a certificate for longer that two years.

1898

The Thraves Brothers of Green Springs decided to erect a brick building south of the Albert Young store in Green Springs.

Peter Pointz, 81, colored, died at the infirmary and was buried in McPherson Cemetery. He had been a resident of Clyde since 1860, had been born in slavery in Kentucky, and escaped by the Underground Railroad. The story of his life, as told by himself, was printed in the Enterprise on March 31, 1898.

90 years ago

1918

Dr. C. Beck suffered from a very sore hand which he pinched badly while putting a tire on his automobile.

While hauling corn-fodder for Jay Fenn, a couple of young men forgot to put their pipes away and the first thing they knew their load of fodder was ablaze. The fodder burned so rapidly that it was all they could do to get the mules away from the wagon, which was entirely consumed except the iron and a short piece of the tongue. The wagon belonged to John Ropke.

A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Norris Pickard; and sons to Mr. and Mrs. Herman Young, Mr. and Mrs. Walter J. Cleveland, Mr. and Mrs. Homer Opper, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Eberhard, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Coe and Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Burkin.

1928

A good-sized barn on the O.L. Fowler farm just north of McPherson Highway was completely destroyed by fire.

Ground was broken for the filling station at the corner of Woodland and McPherson on property purchased by Chris Nieman of Fremont.

The Home Telephone Company announced that 18 miles of cable had been purchased to lay underground in rural districts where overhead telephone wires and poles were destroyed in the sleet storm.

A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Hunsinger; and sons to Mr. and Mrs. Fred Rosen and Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Dalzell.

1938

Mrs. George Willer sustained a painful burn on her right arm from a gas explosion. It was thought that one of her small children turned on a gas burner. The accumulated gas exploded and the little girl was slightly burned.

Daughters were born to Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Schwartz, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Snyder and Mr. and Mrs. J.J. Hoffman.

Local deaths reported were: Clarence J. Kohler; B.F. Hamaker; Mrs. John Cooley; Samuel Jay Lyon; Peter J. Volz; Stephen Dohanos; and Mrs. Hayden Hawk.

1948

Clare Lay Hutchinson, a prominent Galetown farmer, was killed in a tractor accident.

Gary, 2-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Michaels of Route 2, Clyde, fell out of his play wagon and broke his collar bone.

Robert Hintz fell from a ladder while cleaning the walls of the kitchen at First Methodist Church and broke a bone in his left foot.

Daughters were born to Mr. and Mrs. C.L. Woleslagel and Mr. and Mrs. William Rinebolt; and sons to Mr. and Mrs. Nick Zanconiedies and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Larriza.

Local deaths reported were: Mrs. Blanche Wilson; Mrs. Frank Jodon; Mrs. Eva Scott; Fred J. Wertel, 75; Mrs. A.F. (Elizabeth Miller) Wiley, 77; and Mrs. C.D. (Blanche Shoup) Wilson, 80.

1958

Clyde Police Department was to begin enforcing a recent ordinance passed by Council authorizing parking meter fines increased from 10 cents to 50 cents.

Daughters were born to Mr. and Mrs. Jack Armentrout, Mr. and Mrs. Lendon Duncil and Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Baker; and a son to Mr. and Mrs. Jack Watson.

Local deaths reported were: Arthur C. Franks, 55; Mrs. Henry (Minda Miller) Evert, 82; Mrs. Albert (Etta S. Sampson) Keough, 77; infant Robert Sears, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Sears; Mrs. William (Ida Miller) Pershing, 80; Mrs. Kate Vesey, 84; and Mrs. J.R. (Olive Vine) Rhodes.

1968

The old Mallernee house at the corner of Amanda and North Main Streets was being razed to make way for a new Lawson store. The property most recently housed Brugger's Bicycle Shop.

A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Strecker; and sons to Mr. and Mrs. Donald Moroney, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Rutherford and Mr. and Mrs. Dean Pflaumer.

Local deaths reported were: Mrs. Conrad (Marie Neinen) Quimby, 72; and William Anstead, 34.

1988

Clyde Flier Marching Band members marched in their new uniforms for the first time during their trip to the Electric Light Parade at Disney World in Orlando, Florida. The total cost of the new uniforms was $40,000, paid for by Clyde Music Boosters and the Whirlpool Corporation.

Dr. Robert Coll joined the staff at St. Francis Rehabilitation Hospital and Nursing Home.

Local deaths reported were: Mrs. William (Hazel Nearhood Burr Hofelich) Steinhauser, 82; and Albert Borer, 74.

1998

Seneca County Sheriff H. Weldin Neff, Tiffin, was indicted on a first-degree misdemeanor charge of menacing by stalking and complicity.

Local deaths reported were: Marian L. Lamb, 70; Rosa Triona-Mira-Waire, 91; Hetty May Scherf, 81; Geraldine M. Moyer, 76; Ruth Pauline Barber, 91; Franklin Jacob Weisz, 77; and James F. Woodruff, 66.

2007

During the Clyde Council, members stressed that a new Code of Conduct policy adopted by the Clyde Recreation Board also applies to adult teams using park facilities. The council voted 5 to 0 to approve the park code of conduct. The policy also applies to adult teams as well.

* On April 14, Sandusky County Habitat for Humanity will break ground on its newest project and it will be on Church Street. Local residents Karen Sawyer and Walt Frazier are co-chairpersons of the 2007 Habitat house project.
