120 years ago

1888

The nurseries of G.S. Pickett & Son and A.B. French have for some time past been the busiest places in Clyde. Several carloads per day of choice fruit trees, vines, berry roots, etc. have been shipped out, and the rush will continue for a week or more longer. A small army of men are kept busy at the two nurseries, and the proprietors have their hands full in managing and keeping them busy.

Justin R. Gibbons, 20, son of Mr. H.G. Gibbons, died at Passadena, Calif.

110 years ago

1898

The addition to the cemetery was being improved. The old apple orchard at the back was removed, also several unsightly trees, fences and other obstructions. The entire plot was graded with tiling put in where needed. Hundreds of loads of dirt were being hauled into the hollow fronting on the pike.

90 years ago

1918

Mrs. Avery Lewis, who went as delegate to the Rebekah convention at Springfield, became ill while there and was returned home.

Daughters were born to Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Hummell and Mr. and Mrs. Will Sherloh; and sons to Mr. and Mrs. C. Dominic and Mr. and Mrs. Harry Filson.

Local deaths reported were: Mrs. Anna Craig; Geraldine Moyer; and Homer C. Timanus.

80 years ago

1928

Lawrence Friedley, a member of the fire department, saved "the 10 Commandments," a picture painted on cloth by a minister, Rev. Wilson, more than 50 years before the fire. Although the wall two feet from where it hung was on fire, not a thread on the cloth was charred.

A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. John Rogers.

70 years ago

1938

For the 5th time in six months, Elgie's Cafe on McPherson Highway, operated by Mrs. Elgie Mears, was entered by thieves. Entry was made by a rear window and cigars, smoking tobacco, ham, pies ad other eatables were stolen.

Mrs. Cynthia Leach Reed fell from the porch at her home on North Main Street and sustained a broken bone in her right leg just below the hip.

A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Ayres; and a son to Mr. and Mrs. Collin Matter.

Local deaths reported were: Albert Jeschke; Miss Martha Jane Felshaw; Michael James Bergan; and Mrs. Frank X. Baechle.

60 years ago

1948

G.O. Bashaw of East Maple Street had the misfortune of having four fingers on his left hand cut off while working at a punch press at the Clyde Porcelain Steel Corporation.

Mrs. Alma Ellen Albright, widow of Lyman Albright and a widely known Adams Township lady, died in Bellevue Hospital from injuries and shock resulting from a fall at her home.

Considerable damage was done to the Jacob Lentz home at York Station when fire of unknown origin burned the back of the house including the kitchen and wash house and one room next to the kitchen.

The body of Pvt. Lawrence N. Myers, who was killed in action July 29, 1944 in France, arrived in Clyde for final burial.

Fire, believed to have started in the wiring in a clothes closet, caused damage amounting to approximately $1,800 in the Albert Lee apartment building on the east side of North Main Street.

Daughters were born to Mr. and Mrs. Lester McKee, Mr. and Mrs. William Dirlam and Mr. and Mrs. Milton German.

50 years ago

1958

Frank Mason, 99, walked up town to cast his vote in the Primary election. Frank had voted every year since 1880.

George W. Roberts, 84, retired Green Creek farmer, passed away.

40 years ago

1968

The Howard Pearce home on the Clyde-Green Springs Road was damaged when a car driven by Mrs. Robert Bishop of Green Springs struck the east wall. Extensive damage was done to the family heirloom china which was in a cupboard in the corner at the point of impact.

Local deaths reported were: Mrs. Judson (Hermina Ulman) Stacy, 85; Harry E. Mann, 84; Charles W. Beebe, 76; Mrs. Howard (Dorothy Southwood) Saunders, 54; and Vito Capucini, 51.

30 years ago

1978

The first Awards Banquet for Special Education units at the Clyde Schools was held.

Hazel Eberhard received the FFA State Farmer Award.

Local deaths reported were: Floyd Ramsey, 70; Jay Mesnard, 74; Mary J. Walden, 74; and Ernest N. Beatty, 68.

1998

Clyde City Manager Dan Weaver announced that he would be accepting bids for the renovation of the current Clyde Light & Power building for use as a food pantry and EMS station.

Local deaths reported were: Cory S. Woessner, 17; Mary Heller; Marvin Stein, 53; John Raschke, 42; and Sue Ann Audritsh, 64.

2007

Clyde High School hosts the 40th Annual Five-County Invitational Art show on April 28 and 29. Local students win over 50 awards at the show.

While two levies were passed by local and county voters, a replacement permanent improvement levy for the Clyde-Green Springs Exempted Village School District fails.

Green Creek Township trustees were elated Tuesday night following the clear approval of the township's first fire levy in 30 years.
