Hirt named
FREMONT -- The Sandusky County Commissioners have announced that after meeting with the county prosecutor and risk manager, they have utilized their power under the Ohio Revised Code and appointed Chief Deputy Bruce N. Hirt as acting sheriff for Sandusky County.
The appointment was necessary due to the untimely death of Sheriff David Gangwer over the holiday weekend. Commissioners Brad Smith, Terry Thatcher and Dan Liskai took this unanimous action to guarantee a clear chain of command at the sheriff's office and ensure the continuity of public safety services for Sandusky County.
Hirt's appointment was effective today and will last until the Sandusky County Republican Central Committee meets next week to name someone to fulfill the remainder of Sheriff Gangwer's current term, and to also take his position on the general election ballot this November.
President of the board of commissioners, Brad Smith, stated, "It is with heavy hearts that we take this action today, but Chief Deputy Hirt will help guarantee a smooth transition during this very difficult time."
Hirt was sworn in to office by Common Pleas Court Judge Roger Hafford following the commissioners' public session today.
