Give the gift of life

To the editor:

The Red Cross blood drive will be held at The Club Amer-Ital on Wednesday, July 2.

We are in need of all blood, but especially type O. As you know, type O blood is the universal donor. If you are in an accident and need blood in the emergency room, chances are you will receive type O. Most people do not carry a card with their blood type on it. That is why with summer here, and accidents on the rise, it is imperative that an adequate supply of type O blood be available.

We also need blood from all other types. This blood is used when the recipient's blood type is known, for example, when undergoing surgery, cancer treatments or other procedures when blood is needed.

If you can come out and help us meet our quota, it will be greatly appreciated. Be sure to eat a healthy breakfast, and drink plenty of liquids. Ensure you have an adequate iron level by making iron-rich foods part of your daily diet. These include red meat, poultry, fish, green leafy vegetables, iron-fortified cereals, nuts, raisins and prunes.

We hope to see you on July 2. The hours will be from noon-6 p.m.

Red Cross volunteers,

Peggy Missler
