Marvin Rettig

Hospital's Marvin Rettig finslist for state honor

COLUMBUS - Marvin Rettig, Vice President for Development at The Bellevue Hospital (TBH), was one of 75 finalists from around the State of Ohio for the Ohio Hospital Association's (OHA) "Albert E. Dyckes Health Care Worker of the Year Award.

Rettig, who has been employed at TBH for 16 years and was on the Board of Directors at TBH for nine years prior to his hiring, is retiring from TBH as of June 20. In addition to his development work at TBH, he is also in charge of physician recruitment, directs TBH's Foundation, and oversees TBH's Volunteer Program.

"I feel very honored and humbled to have the opportunity to represent this hospital and our community through this nomination," said Rettig, who attended the awards banquet in Columbus.

Michael K. Winthrop, President and CEO of TBH, noted, "It's appropriate that Marvin was The Bellevue Hospital's nominee for the OHA's Al Dyckes Health Care Worker of the Year Award. For 16 years Marvin has contributed greatly to the success and growth of not only the hospital, but also the Foundation."

Added Winthrop, "Marvin also directed the extremely successful Capital Campaign that raised over $2.5 million in contributions for the new hospital. As everyone knows who has ever worked with Marvin, he is always giving 110%."

Rettig's nomination noted, "Marvin is Mr. Bellevue Hospital. He is continually on the move to forward the hospital's goal and objectives. With no background experience, he was hired based on his values and principles. As our physician recruiter, he is credited with signing 95 percent of the hospital's active staff. As our Foundation president, he is credited with building a viable and successful foundation. He is the essence of good will and hard work, both qualities that are and will be needed in ensuring the future of quality health care in Ohio. You can count on him in a time of need as he is ever vigilant to ensure you are comfortable, cared for and given the respect you deserve."

Rettig's nomination also noted, "Marvin developed a specialty care clinic in cooperation with University of Toledo Medical Center, brining needed specialists to our small community. He has the ability to inspire individuals and employees on every shift know Marvin. He is the first to respond to a crisis and the first to ask 'how can I help?' He is an advocate of patient rights and is ever vigilant to assure people are comfortable, cared for, and given the respect they deserve."

Rettig is past president of the Bellevue Area Chamber of Commerce, past president of the Bellevue Rotary Club, past member of the Bellevue Development Corporation, Ministerial Association, Sandusky County Mental Health Association, and served for 10 years as pastor at Bellevue's St. Paul United Church of Christ.

Every hospital in the state was invited to nominate one person for the Dyckes Award, which was created in 1996 to honor a hospital employee who demonstrates leadership, reflects the values and ideals of Ohio's health care facilities, goes above and beyond the call of duty, gives back to the community, and has overcome odds to succeed.

"No matter when department needs help, what time of the day or night, or how long it will take, Marvin is willing to make the commitment," continued his award nomination. "When you see him working, you join in because he is the example of what it means to be a member of the family of The Bellevue Hospital. When there is work to accomplish in building a safer, healthier and better place to live, you will find Marvin rolling up his sleeves. We are proud to nominate him for Health Care Worker of the Year."

OHA presented Michael Kerr, EMT-P, regional learning CPR program instructor at Humility of Mary Health Partners St. Joseph's Health Center with the Albert E. Dyckes Health Care Worker of the Year Award at its annual recognition dinner. Kerr teaches advanced life support skills to hundreds of doctors, nurses and other front line staff at St. Joseph, St. Elizabeth and St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Centers, giving them the tools to save lives at the hospital and throughout the community. His dedication to saving lives extends beyond his work at the hospital, where he works as a volunteer firefighter and has traveled to respond to crises in Louisiana, Guam and Korea.
